I Never Told You

I sensed you were near
but I could not see you,
I could not hear you,
the warmth of your hug
did not stir my soul,
your insight into the human condition
did not engage me – that day.

Still, something,
perhaps an undeveloped sixth sense,
a probe into the twilight of my existence,
something…
told me you were near.

It was more than the longing
that I have felt
since the day I fell in love.
I was more than the loss
that I felt
the day you moved away
(and I never told you)
It was intangible,
but not unreal, not unthinkable.

Two full days passed,
two days to become distracted,
two days to forget
what I had sensed.
Two days before I heard
the sweet sound of your voice,
before I watched your graceful move
as you crossed the lawn,
before I felt your tender hug,
and once again
I was in love
(and I never told you)
