Etui

Everyone I know is so unlike you,
a small knit in the cosmic fabric
blending and shaping most of
what we call life:
You are the single thread
that stands out from the pattern.

Years ago,
I saw such as fine a thread
and I tugged at it
… the cosmic fabric rippled.
My life became full
with boundless imaginations
and pleasures –
I loved
and was loved,
until love broke.
The strands that held us
became frayed, and we let them go.
The broken fibers remind me still
that there is love,
they remind me and I savor them,
for the day will come again
that I will find
such a fine thread.

I hesitate to reach out
and pull at this pattern.
It is comfortable, easy on the eyes,
a pleasure to live with;
what if I unravel it?
